What Writing Means to Me by Naomi Sedwick

Naomi Sedwick '26, Sidwell Friends School

For me, writing is more than just words on a paper. Writing is a never-ending gift which speaks with an inner voice that conveys emotion, depth, and true expression. Writing has always had a special place in my heart and has been one of my greatest passions since I was little. Whether it be through writing poems on napkins as a pastime, participating in my school newspaper in middle school and high school, or attending a journalism program, writing has always been a part of me. I have always had a passion for words and find the ability to organize my thoughts into flowing sentences that tell a story intriguing. As a result of this, english has been my favorite class for the duration of my memory. The ability to have fun while practicing an important skill is something I will forever cherish. A large factor in my love of writing comes from my English teachers, since I truly connected with them through my passion of writing. They gave me chances to grow, improve, and challenge myself as a writer. With writing, there is no limit to improvement, it is constant development and opportunity.

Writing has given me a voice for the words I don’t always say out loud. It supplies me with a safe space and a comforting sense of familiarity. Writing invokes inner feelings inside of me and my emotions erupt onto the page and come alive. Whenever I start typing or pick up a pencil, words just flow out of me and stream onto the page. This explosion of creativity and blooming ideas is truly an incredible experience and is what makes writing so special. My favorite part about writing is how it brings life to words and conveys such strong emotions to any reader. It is the only place in the world where people from all ages and backgrounds can read the same thing, experience the same story, and feel shared emotions from it.

My passion for writing also deeply connects to my passion and love for music. Whether I am singing the lyrics or listening to them, the words speak volumes to me. I connect with the words in the music on a deeper level and it transports me to such a special place and state of mind. Overall, I feel the expression of words has shaped the way I am and who I have become as a person. Writing has always been a vital part of my life and has provided me with the amazing opportunity to express myself. I look forward to further exploring my passion for writing and continuing to grow as a writer. Writing means so much to me, and I know it will be a big part of me for the rest of my life.
